The CECAM Philharmonic Band

The Center for Musical Training and Development of Mixe Culture (CECAM) is a unique space in the world; it is a philharmonic music teaching center, composed of wind and string instruments, whose objective is to strengthen, improve, preserve and disseminate the musical and artistic tradition of the Mixe peoples, also known as "the never defeated", because, according to Novohispanic chronicles, both the Spanish conquistadors and the natives tried to subdue them without success and never managed to penetrate their mountains.

  • CECAM was founded in 1977 based on the transcendental idea of creating a music school in the region. It is located in the community of Santa MarΓa Tlahuitoltepec, in the Sierra Norte Region of Oaxaca, approximately two and a half hours from the City of Oaxaca de JuΓ‘rez. Its creation was the result of the collective decision and collaboration of 11 communities in the Mixe area, taking into account the material needs, the means of communication and the conditions of the territory. Thanks to CECAM and the efforts of these communities, philharmonic music has flourished in the region, leading to the existence of quality philharmonic bands in many towns in the area.

CECAM offers a wide range of educational programs including: a) Early Childhood Musical Education, b) Musical Induction and c) Professional Technician in Traditional Music of Oaxaca. Currently, the school has more than 180 students, aged between 6 and 25 years, however the age of entry is not a barrier.
